If you want to stop your sleep apnea Toronto area health professionals can help you. But it is very important to get the proper tests done. And, it is also important to get as many of the tests done as possible that are outlined below.

The reasons it is a good idea to have a sleep apnea Toronto area health professional perform as many of the following tests as possible is that this will help determine not only if you have a sleep apnea condition but also how severe your condition might be.

The more diagnostic feedback a sleep apnea Toronto area professional knows about your and your condition, the better he can prepare and suggest the best treatment for your needs.

A Toronto sleep apnea dentist such as Dr. Goodfellow can perform all of the assessments described below.

The first thing you should look for is someone who gets a dental and medical “history” from you BEFORE and treatment suggestions are made.

Of primary importance is your airway. This needs to be checked out thoroughly. Ecovision is an excellent tool to do this test with.

Your tonsils and your gag reflex need to be checked.

An intra-oral exam needs to be performed that is comprehensive.

X-rays should really be taken.

Your periodontal health should be checked as well.

An orthotic examination should be done.

And finally, you should get a thorough and proper exam done of your bite and temporomandibular joint.

Many consider the custom dental mouth guard a dentist can provide who treats sleep apnea to be one of the most effective solutions to this condition.

Because of this, a dentist with extensive training in how to treat disorders relating to the jaw is an excellent choice of professionals to see.

Sleep Apnea Toronto

Some people are unknowingly at much higher risk of diseases such as heart disease, strokes and high blood pressure. This same group of people also has the symptom of being quite tired during the day. The medical condition called sleep apnea Toronto residents get is the cause. With sleep apnea Toronto patients with this disorder are known to simply stop breathing while they are sleeping. This often occurs twenty or more times a night and each time it lasts for about 10 to 2o seconds.

The condition of sleep apnea Toronto patients experience has three forms: Central, or CSA, Obstructive, known as CSA, and Complex/Mixed Sleep Apnea.

CSA is caused by the muscles of the soft palate and uvula becoming too relaxed. This causes them to sag and the airway then becomes blocked and sometimes collapses. The body will continue to try to breathe, but will be unable to. Blood oxygen levels will then start to drop as a result. When the fact that the blood’s oxygen levels are dropping is registered by the brain, it sends out a signal to the body letting it know that it needs to wake up and start breathing again.

A large number of sleep apnea Toronto patients with OSA have an abnormally narrow airway in the area around the base of the tongue and palate. Many also have soft tissue and low muscle tone around the airway. Weight gain, alcohol, taking tranquilizers, anti-histamines, and sleeping pills can all contribute towards worsening the condition. OSA is the most common form of the condition. Snoring is not directly related to it, but is often one of its symptoms.

CSA is a rarer form of the condition and its causes are completely different from OSA’s. OSA has origins of a physical nature, while CSA is a neurological disorder in which confused or delayed signals are sent to the respiratory system.

CSA is caused by the way that the brain chooses to monitor the body’s breathing. Instead of monitoring the blood’s oxygen levels, it starts to monitor its carbon dioxide levels and uses them as the basis to determine when the next breath should be drawn. Breathing will speed up, or slow down based on the levels of carbon dioxide that are detected in the bloodstream. Quicker, deeper breathes reduce the level, while slower ones allow it to build up again.

When it notes increased carbon dioxide levels, the brain sends a message to the respiratory system that breathing must speed up. The levels then drop. The brain, however, does not react quickly enough, and continues to send out the message. The result is that levels are now too low. When this is finally detected, it sends out another message to decrease the speed of breathing. The person’s breathing then slows drastically, or even stops altogether, until carbon dioxide levels build up again. This cycle continuously repeats itself, resulting in the pattern of abnormal breathing known as “Cheyne-Stokes” breathing. Apnea in this form is usually seen only in people who are over sixty.

Complex/Mixed Sleep Apnea Toronto patients get is a combination of the other two types. In it, the person suffers prolonged periods of OSA that are intermixed with shorter periods of CSA. It has been proven in studies that when the OSA is treated, the CSA also decreases or disappears.

Sleep apnea Toronto residents have is not a condition that should be ignored or left untreated. It can cause major health repercussions. Continuous positive airway pressure machines are often used successfully in treating it. Dental appliances and surgery can also help to alleviate the symptoms of OSA. If you suffer from symptoms that you believe may be related to sleep apnea you should see your doctor or dentist who treats sleep apnea.
